Alabama man indicted in murder of his 'exhibitionist' wife

The husband of a suburban Alabama mom who lived a double life as an online exhibitionist has been charged in her murder.

A Shelby County Grand Jury indicted William Jeffrey West, 44,  for the death of his 42-year-old wife Kathleen 'Kat' West.

Kat's nearly-naked body was found outside the couple's Calera home around 5am on January 13. She was only wearing a sports bra.

The indictment, delivered Thursday, accuses West of killing his wife by hitting her with a glass bottle.

Defense lawyer John Robbins said West has maintained his innocence since the beginning.

'We are going to do everything that we can to establish that he is not guilty of this crime,' said Robbins.

'It appears that the state's case is based on circumstantial evidence.'

Calera Police Chief Sean Lemley revealed that West had been the suspect 'from the very beginning'.

Lemley said Kat died of blunt force trauma to the head, but would not discuss how she came to be in the street and whether she was killed inside or outside the house.

Kat was found dead lying face down in a pool of blood by a neighbor on their way to work.

She had her cell phone placed beside her lifeless body and an empty bottle of absinthe balanced on top of it.

Witnesses said that the empty bottle was green and that the crime scene appeared to be staged, according to The Birmingham News

Lemley said the couple's 12-year-old daughter was not home at the time of her mother's murder, or when her father was arrested at the house.

'It's a tragedy all the way around for everyone involved,' he added.

West, a former US military policeman and campus security guard, was arrested five weeks later.

Robbins said West knew about his wife's activities and wasn't jealous or angry.

'We will be looking into his wife's double life, among other things, to see how her "other" lifestyle is connected to her death.'

West, who was fired from his job as an unsworn police officer at Birmingham-Southern College, is 'heartbroken' over the loss of his wife and is worried about their daughter and how the loss is affecting her, Robbins added.

In conversations with friends, the father-of-two insisted the death was purely an accident and that he never had a problem with his wife's online activities.

One close confidante, Mike Waters, wrote in a now-deleted Facebook post seen by DailyMail.com: 'I was able to talk to my friend Jeff last night in length. In the upcoming days true facts will be coming out.

'And everybody will find out that this was a terrible accident, that involved excessive alcohol consumption...Absinthe!'

Another friend who spoke with DailyMail.com on condition of anonymity insisted West knew his wife was an online seductress and even 'got off' on the notion she was desired by countless men.

'She was a sweet lady who was fun, playful and loved to tease either sex,' dished the source. 'I know Jeff was well aware of whatever it was she or they were doing.'

Kat and her husband were last seen together the night before her death buying a bottle of Lucid Absinthe and a bottle of Jameson Irish Whiskey at a local liquor store.

West, who was arrested last week and remains in jail, has filed a motion claiming his $500,000 bond is excessive.

The request said the man poses no threat to the community and has friends and relatives who want to help pay his bail. He remains in custody.
