Gennady “GGG” Golovkin is a Kazakhstani professional boxer and Olympic silver medalist. His professional record stands at 37 wins and 1 draw. He currently holds the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, and IBO middleweight titles. Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin was born on April 8, 1982, in Karagandy, Kazakhstan. In addition to Kazakh, he speaks German, Russian and English. His Russian father, Gennady, was a coal miner, and his Korean mother, Elizaveta, worked as a lab assistant. He had three brothers, Sergey (d 1994), Vadim (d 1990), and fraternal twin Maxim.

CAREER
Golovkin began his training in Karaganda, Kazakhstan, under coach Victor Dmitriev. He competed and won gold in the light middleweight at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan. He won gold in the middleweight division at the 2003 World Championships in Bangkok. Golovkin was awarded a scholarship from the Olympic Solidarity program in late 2002. He represented Kazakhstan at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, winning silver in the middleweight class. He also won Gold at the 2004 Asian Championships in Puerto Princesa. Golovkin competed at the amateur level from 2000 to 2005. His amateur record stands at 345 wins and 5 losses. He lost the 2005 World Championships to Egypt’s Mohamed Hikal.

Golovkin made his professional debut in a May 2006 win against Hungary’s Gabor Balogh. He boxed for Universum Box-Promotion (UBP) from 2006 to 2010 (18 victories including a vacant WBO Inter-Continental middleweight title). Golovkin terminated his contract with UBP due to a lack of direction and growth. He’s currently signed to K2 and trains under Abel Sanchez in Big Bear, California. He defeated Colombia’s Milton Nunez in August 2010 for the WBA interim middleweight title. He bested the US’s Lajuan Simon in December 2011 for the vacant IBO middleweight title. The WBA elevated Golovkin from Middleweight champion to (Super) Champion in June 2014. He successfully defended both the WBA and IBO titles against Daniel Geale of the UK in July 2014.

Golovkin defeated Mexico’s Marco Antonio Rubio in October 2014 for the WBC interim middleweight title. He defeated Canada’s David Lemieux in October 2015 for the IBF middleweight title. He was elevated to full champion in 2016 after Canelo Alvarez vacated the WBC middleweight title. GGG and Canelo Alvarez faced each other on September 16, 2017 at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada. The match went 12 rounds and ended in a draw. Golovkin’s professional records stand at 37 wins (33 by KO), 1 draw, and no losses. He has never been knocked down or knocked out.
