The man of many voices, Dr. Sanket Bhosale is indeed a household name. His flawless impersonation of several Bollywood and Hollywood actors is appreciated by fans the world over and has been a point of attraction for many reality shows. His mimicry of Sanjay Dutt got superstar Salman Khan rolling on the floor during one of the shows. An actor, comedian, show anchor and a doctor, he’s a man of many crafts. Here’s chatting with him in an exclusive interview
What attracts you the most about stand-up comedy and how has the journey been so far?
The ability to make others Laugh and thereby create moments of happiness, wherein they are able to forget their day-to-day worries at least for some time, gives me immense satisfaction. I am also a qualified Doctor in real life and I firmly believe that “Laughter serves as the best medicine”. My journey has been satisfying so far, but there is always so much more to do, newer challenges and creative peaks to climb.
You are a practising doctor when you told your parents you wanted to be a comedian too how did they react?
Fortunately for me both my parents have been immensely supportive in all my choices be it pursuing and studying medicine or later making that all-important decision to enter the world of entertainment. Their continued support and blessings are always with me and I derive great strength from it.
If there is one thing you'd like to change in the stand-up comedy scene what would it be?
Fortunately, we live in a free and democratic country where freedom of speech prevails, and Artists can express themselves without any kind of fear or pressure. Since content today is available more easily for consumption on varied screens and exposure to various age brackets within the family and children are privy to it, as artists and content creators we ourselves should take responsibility for the content we create. Be more socially responsible while we create content. I firmly believe content has to be fun but also clean and my creatives are always centred keeping all those factors also in mind.
Recall a gig that you did and enjoyed the most/ most memorable stand-up comedy act till date and explain what it made it memorable.
Three Of the best moments for me as an artist must be in this order.
A) Making an entry into The Kapil Sharma show as Sanju Baba and making an immediate connection with the audience. The audience response was overwhelming and was satisfying for me as an artist.
B) Me Performing on The Drama Company ‘show a spoof segment’ on Salman Khan's popular show Dus Ka Dum with both Salman Khan and Sohail Khan as my celebrity guests on the episode made for a memorable and fun moment indeed.
C) Lastly having Sanju Baba as my Celebrity guest on MTV Beats Celebrity chat show Baba Ki Chowki with me playing Baba was a hugely humbling and emotional moment.
Your videos always go viral on social media. Did you expect such a response when you started off?
When you start off, you only start with a particular creative line of thought and you are only looking to do justice to it and come up with good sticky content. I write mostly my own short-form skits and enact them. The audience reaction serves as a motivation for more and fresher content ideas.
What is one tip that you would give to budding comics out there?
Stay updated with current events, trends and technology and keep believing and give wings to your creative ideas.
How often do you take inspiration for your content from current affairs?
Very often as any content on anything topical stands a better chance to connect with audiences provided it is well made.
Is a Bollywood career on your to-do list?
Yes, very much. As an artist, I am open for content on all formats, all kinds of screens. OTT, movies, Television, Digital -- I am up for it.
