Biography

Oladapo Olaitan Olaonipekun (born October 25, 1984), professionally addressed as Dagrin, was a well-known indigenous rapper and songwriter. Meanwhile, despite the presence of pioneer mother-tongue rappers like Lord of Ajasa, his copious Yoruba rap songs captivated the hearts of everyone as he made a niche for himself.

Darin has collaborated with many Nigerian superstars like Sossick, DJ Neptune, MI Abaga, 9ice, Reminisce, Konga, Omawunmi, TGBT, Frenzy, Oritse Femi, Ruggedman, D.J Spaclare, Kode, Sheyman, Dr. Frabz, Kenny St. Brown, amongst others.

On April 22, 2010, the “Kondo” singer’s life was cut short when he died of injuries incurred in a deadly car accident.

Early Life

Dagrin was born on October 25, 1984, in Ogun State, Nigeria’s southwestern region. He died on April 22, 2010, in Mushin, Lagos State, Nigeria’s southwestern region, at the age of 25. He began his musical career in 1994 and continued till his death in 2010 at the age of 25. 

He was born to Comrade Olaniyi Abolaji Olanipekun (father) and Falilat Olaonipekun (mother). He has two siblings, a sister named Bukky Olaonipekun and a brother Olatunbosun ‘TROD’ Olaonipekun who happens to be a rapper too.

Dagrin is from Ogun State in Nigeria’s southwest, where he received his primary and secondary school education and his First School Leaving Certificate and West African Senior School Certificate.

Dagrin moved to Lagos after finishing his early education to pursue a career as a rapper. He lived in Meiran, Alagbado, Lagos State, during his time in Lagos.

Career 

Still On The Matter was Dagrin‘s debut studio album. However, it failed to chart due to insufficient promotion. He released his second studio album, Chief Executive Omoita (C.E.O)., in 2009. He was nominated for the Nigerian Entertainment Awards in 2010 for Best Album C.E.O. , Hottest Single “Pon Pon Pon,” Best Rap Act, and Best Vocal Collaboration. His album C.E.O. (Chief Executive Omota English: Chief Executive Thug) was nominated for a Hip Hop World Award for best rap album in 2010.

The singles “Pon Pon Pon” and “Kondo” were released as a result of it. Y.Q, 9ice, MI Abaga, Iceberg Slim, Omobaba, Terry G, Ms. Chief, Owen G, K01, Code, Mister Dollar, TMD Entertainment, Omawumi, Chudy K, Bigiano, and Konga were among the Nigerian musicians with whom Dagrin collaborated. Sossick, Dr. Frabz, Sheyman, Frenzy, 02, and Heavy L Beatz were among his musical collaborators. 

If I DieDagrin‘s third studio album was released after his death. If I Die was one of the songs he sang on the album If I Die, and it seemed as if he knew he was going to die soon after the record’s release.

Cause Of Death

Dagrin was killed in a car accident on April 14, 2010, in Lagos, Nigeria, and died eight days later, on April 22, 2010, at the age of 25.
